What to Carry, What not to Carry <> India to US Texas
I will directly start with the topic as we have covered the introduction and rest in the previous section.
Please keep in mind that the below draft is from a house makers point of view :)
What to carry?
- Universal travel adapter
- A step up transformer if you are planning to get any electric appliances from India
- Would not suggest this unless utmost necessary, its better you purchase appliances here
- Bed sheet and pillow covers (Expensive in US)
- Under garments ( Not sure if we can get a perfect fit + they are costlier here)
- Swimming costume - Even if you don't know how to swim, please carry it as we have cool places in the US for non swimmers too
- Traditional Wear ( Not more than 2-3 if you are struggling with the luggage weight )
- Umbrella (MUST, you never know when it might rain in the states)
- Only get home made masalas (red chilli powder etc)
- You get literally every food item in Irving/Dallas that you get in India
- Ready to make for initial couple of weeks
- Rice cooker and containers with extra gas kits and whistles (Expensive in US)
- Chakla Belan (Expensive in US)
- Masala Dabba (Expensive in US)
- Oil container ( Less + Costlier choices as compared to India )
- A good Indian potato skin peeler and knife, if you have favorites
- At least 1 set of cooking and dinning essentials
- Spoon (Big and small)
- Plate
- Bowl
- Mug
- Kadai
- Tawa
- Medicines (Make sure you do not get excess or the medicines which are about to expire)
- Ensure you carry prescriptions for all them
- All the things required for Pooja (Worshiping the God) (Expensive in US)
- The smallest pack of body, face and cloth washing soap ( For 1-2 weeks )
- Carry some dry snacks like theplas, bread butter, packed food etc to munch in the flight
- This helps when you are hungry or watching a movie in the flight :p
- This also comes to rescue when you get hunger pangs after landing
- List/Details about what is filled in each travel bag
- We made sure we fill it up in a google sheet so that we have less chances of losing it
- This made our life very easy as we just glanced at the list and started unpacking only necessary luggage in week 1. Plus my husband never panicked in my absence :p
What not to carry?
- Electric appliances do not work here unless you have a transformer
- Excess Clothing - There are major sales in the US which are very pocket friendly
- Leather Jackets and shoes
- Winter wear (If you are landing in Winter just carry 1 Jacket until you get a new one from US)
- No flours, lentils, seeds in any of the food items
- Pillow, Eye mask or ear plug are provided in 99.9% of international flights
- Excess of soaps, perfumes, make up etc as US is the best place to shop for these items (E.g. At Bath and body works)
There are 100 more things I can mention but these are the most crucial ones that I could think of :).
If you have any other concerns drop by in comments section and I will get back to you.
